Burtons was established in 1948 at Burton End Garage in Haverhill, Suffolk. Later in 1971 the company relocated to a purpose built depot at Duddery Hill, Haverhill. In 1998 the Richardson family, second and third generation decendants of the company’s founders sought retirement; Paul Cooper, with twenty years' bus and coach operating experience throughout East Anglia, was appointed as Managing Director. He spearheaded the company’s expansion and during the following ten years developed it into the major bus and coach operation it is today.

Paul's business sense demanded a corporate identity, principally for the company logo, vehicle livery, drivers' uniform and publicity material. This, with an exemplary service record, led to Burtons gaining the CoachMarque accreditation in 1999. In 1998 Burtons acquired Premier Travel Services, thus expanding its interests in the Cambridge conference market, corporate travel and bringing the ever popular Premier Daybreaks day excursion programme to the Burtons fold.

In 1998 the company also capitalised on the resurgence of interest in rural bus operations following a change of government; this afforded the opportunity to expand into local bus service provision in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, an aspect that has continued to grow since.

In late 2003 the company joined the Tellings Golden Miller Group plc making it part of a large network of operators covering the UK and an even more dominant player in the East Anglia bus and coach industry. During 2004 Burtons acquired Frank Harris Coaches of Grays, Essex, thus extending its influence to the London Gateway and Thames Estuary, increasing Burtons' customer base and services offered. Burtons Coaches operate services on behalf of National Express. Routes operated include :

The company also provides extensive rail replacement services throughout East Anglia and into North London on behalf of National Express owned ‘ONE railway’ and the First Group owned ‘First Capital Connect’

In 2004 Burtons acquired 'Network Colchester' from Arriva and set about developing a network of urban bus services in Colchester and tendered rural services in the North Essex hinterland. Always eager to maintain a young fleet and avoid costly breakdowns, Burtons purchases new vehicles every year to the latest specifications. All compy with recent European Emmission standards and the requirements of the new London Low Emmission Zone (LEZ), Thus avoiding the heavy financial penalties incurred by operating older 'dirty' vehicles into the capital.
